Once, he was the sun. When he was near me, the weather was always fair. Looking at him, I saw a calm blue summer sky Crowned with a halo of soft rays That shone brightly and chased away the shadows. He was light, And warmth, And energy, And he gave of himself freely. When he left, night fell. I shivered in the dark And kept moving, lest I freeze, And turned my eyes eastward. But now the dawn has come, and he is overcast; His light does little to dispel the gloom. The sky is spattered with glistening rain Shed by the wild black clouds above. And yet, within the clouds are beams of light, Winking and twinkling at me as if to say That the sun but waits for the storm to pass And there is a silver lining.
